HCAP Selects a New Head Start Assistant Director
HCAP is pleased to announce that Nicole Revis has been named its newest Head Start Assistant Director. The HCAP Head Start Assistant Director assists in the planning, development and evaluation of all Head Start components. This position will also be responsible for overseeing program quality assurance and support services.
Nicole is originally from Hawaii, but has been working in California’s Central Valley for the Community Action Partnership-Madera County for the past 4 years as a Health Specialist for the Head Start Health Services Program. She developed and implemented policies and procedures to align with Head Start performance standards, developed and conducted health and safety trainings, served as liaison for Child Welfare and Licensing, assisted with program evaluations, and performed monitoring of the health component.
Nicole holds a Masters of Arts in Adult Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Human Services Management from the University of Phoenix. She is also a certified Breastfeeding Educator.
Grant Kogami, HCAP Head Start Director, states “I am excited for Nicole to join our HCAP Head Start executive management team as she possesses all of the background and experience needed for this position. She comes to us with high praise from the Head Start Regional Office, and her passion and commitment for the work we do is evident from her years of service to her former program and community.”
HCAP Staff Attends NASCSP Training
This week, HCAP’s Corporate Office and District Service Center staff attended the 2019 National Association For State Community Services Programs (NASCSP) Training at Ala Moana Hotel. HCAP joined staff from neighbor island Community Action Agencies – Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, Kauai Economic Opportunity, and Maui Economic Opportunity – in the 2-day training.
HCAP staff had the opportunity to learn best practices on the Results Oriented Management and Accountability (ROMA) Cycle, Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) monitoring, Weatherization Assistance Program/Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program grant performance and spending, among other things.
NASCSP, which represents State WAP & CSBG Directors in their work to improve the lives of low-income families, keeps its members, the federal government, and other interested parties informed about issues related to CSBG and Department of Energy/WAP through its publications and training. Many of HCAP’s programs, including the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program and the Kupuna Independent Life Series, are funded through CSBG.
Kumuhonua Residents Enjoy Food Prepared by LCC Culinary Students
In early July, the Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Leeward Community College (LCC) teamed up with students from their Culinary Arts Program and the cadets from the Youth Challenge Academy to prep and cook meals to feed the homeless. Residents at HCAP’s Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center were selected to be the recipients of food prepared and cooked by the LCC culinary students. The event was a great success, and Kumuhonua residents really enjoyed it.
Kumuhonua staff would like to extend a big mahalo to Joy Mahiko, the Workforce Development Coordinator at LCC and the rest of the office staff for making this event possible.
SCSEP Participant Thrives in Groundskeeper Trainee Role
Although Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) participant Bertram has only been a groundskeeper trainee at the Central District Service Center for a few months, Central District Service Center staff are impressed by Bertram’s strong work ethic and outstanding performance. Here is an excerpt from a letter written by Community Services Manager Katy Perry:
We all love Bert. Bert is a fresh air for our District. He comes to work early and always finishes his projects on time. Our District is now sparkling with pride since Bert started caring for us. Bert is not just a team player, but also an inspiration to his peers. Bert is so patient and confident in his skills. Bert has the ability to act and make decisions without the help or advice of other people. If Bert sees something that needs to be fixed, cleaned or disposed, Bert will automatically take care of it. Thank you SCSEP for Bert!
Central District Service Center Staff Attend Inmate Health Fair
HCAP’s Central District Service Center staff recently participated in an inmate health fair that was held at the Federal Detention Center. The purpose of the event was to provide inmates with information about the resources available to them as they seek to re-integrate back into society. HCAP remains committed to providing work furlough participants with employment assistance and wraparound services, so that they can work towards becoming more economically and socially self-sufficient.
