In the Garden with Ala Wai Head Start

This week, the keiki at Ala Wai Head Start employed their fine and gross motor skills while preparing their classroom garden beds for new plants. The keiki also learned about the importance of safety rules while properly using shovels to carefully mix garden and potting soil.

While prepping the soil, the keiki discovered worms. Their knowledge of insects and gardening was expanded upon through observing the worms’ physical characteristics and movements, and engaging their tactile sense by touching the worms. They also learned about the vital role worms have in fertilizing the soil for plants. The keiki had lots of fun in the sun and are looking forward to more planting!

Central Client Employed as Certified Nursing Assistant

Daylen first contacted HCAP’s Central District Service Center in January 2022 to learn more about tuition assistance for vocational training. He had recently moved from Molokaʻi to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and hoped to begin the prerequisite courses at Leeward Community College (LCC). Daylen was able to secure a partial scholarship for LCC’s Certified Nursing Assistant program, but needed assistance covering the remaining tuition and fees. The Office of Continuing Education at LCC referred Daylen to HCAP’s Nā Lima Hana Employment Core Services Program to explore his options.

Central District staff enrolled Daylen in Nā Lima Hana and he was approved to receive tuition assistance through the program. Daylen was excited to begin classes at LCC and updated Central District staff on his progress in the following months. He successfully completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program and passed the final certification exam, in addition to receiving certifications in CPR and Basic Life Support Training.

After completing the program, Daylen was offered a part-time Nursing Assistant position in comprehensive cardiac care at The Queen’s Medical Center. The part-time schedule allows Daylen to gain experience in the nursing field while still attending classes and working toward earning his bachelor’s degree. He has already completed over 30 days on the job and Central District staff look forward to supporting Daylen as he continues reaching his education and career goals.

Hā Initiative Explores the Water Cycle

This week, students from the Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program’s Kalihi classroom learned about the water cycle. Students learned that the water cycle consists of four steps – precipitation, collection, evaporation/transpiration, and condensation – which occur in a constant loop.

This week’s lesson focused on the evaporation/transpiration step of the water cycle. Transpiration occurs when plants take up water through their roots and distribute it to the rest of the plant through the stem. Excess water then evaporates from the surface of the plant. To demonstrate this process, students placed white carnations into vases of colored water and left them overnight. When they returned the next day, students observed how the carnation stems drew up water and distributed it to the rest of the plant, changing their white flowers to match the colored water.
