HCAP to Participate in Charity Walk ’19
HCAP will be participating in the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association’s Charity Walk ’19 on May 18, 2019. This is a great opportunity to get together with fellow HCAP employees, board members, and supporters to get some exercise, enjoy good food and entertainment, and get to know one another better, all at the same time.
Donation proceeds will benefit HCAP programs and services. This is HCAP’s fourth year participating in the Charity Walk, and we look forward to having an even bigger turnout than last year. HCAP Provides Family with Wraparound Services
John and his family have been regular clients at Central District Service Center’s Ohana Produce monthly food distribution program. Last month, John contacted the Central District Service Center seeking additional help after their electricity was disconnected due to unpaid electric bills. John and his wife had been struggling to make ends meet with their incomes.
Through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)’s Emergency Crisis Intervention (ECI) credit, Central District Service Center staff was able to restore the family’s electricity on the same day. The staff also assisted John and his two adult daughters with their employment needs by enrolling them in the Na Lima Hana Employment Core Services (ECS) Program. They signed up for Job Readiness Training and received help with their resumes and job applications. John and his two daughters were able to obtain employment and are currently working towards self-sufficiency. John, who had been selling fish, is now working at a car rental company.
Kumuhonua Resident Moves into Section 8 Apartment Complex
In 2018, Leah received an eviction notice from her landlord. She had no choice but to vacate her home and eventually became homeless, living on the streets for several months. To improve her chances of obtaining housing, Leah completed intake at Hale Mauliola, the City’s Housing Navigation Service Center at Sand Island.
While at Hale Hauliola, Leah accepted a referral to HCAP’s Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center. In June 2018, Leah moved into Kumuhonua. While residing at Kumuhonua, case management staff made sure that she was taken care of. Leah suffers from several medical issues, and staff made sure that Leah attended all of her mandatory doctor’s appointments and filled out prescriptions for her daily medications. Leah also gained valuable life skills at Kumuhonua by attending workshops on budgeting and learning how to be financially prepared for unforeseen incidents and emergencies.
While living at Kumuhonua, Leah applied and successfully obtained a Section 8 voucher for a rental complex. Earlier this year, Leah moved out of the Kumuhonua Transitional Living Center and into her new residence. Leah is doing well and Kumuhonua staff couldn’t be happier for her.
Windward STEM Students Participate in Minerals Lab
At HCAP’s Hā Initiative: Creative STEM After-School Program, a 21st Century Community Learning Center, students at the Windward STEM Exploration Center participated in a hands-on, interactive lab on minerals. Students were given a set of 15 mystery minerals to observe, collected data on the properties of each mineral, and researched and discovered what minerals they had been given.
During this lab activity, students learned about Friedrich Mohs, a German geologist, who had developed the hardness scale they used for the hardness test. With background research, students conducted the test with all 15 minerals and determined the ratings on a mini graph.
Ala Wai Head Start Children Learn about Construction Equipment
The children of Ala Wai Head Start recently concluded their unit on construction equipment. Their fascination with construction began at the start of the school year. The children would run up to the fence and stare in amazement as they watched the large construction equipment replace old water pipes.
During their study of construction equipment, children learned about different types of construction equipment (e.g. their parts and their purposes), why construction equipment are important to construction workers, and the significance of construction equipment to the Hawaiian Islands.
As a class, the children took daily walks around the school and near the construction site. They also watched children’s videos about construction equipment, interacted with construction toys, and built models from cardboard boxes, foam, and recycled packaging materials.
HCAP is Hiring LIHEAP Intake Aides
HCAP is currently accepting applications for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Intake Aides. LIHEAP Intake Aides are responsible for screening and interviewing applicants for program eligibility. This is a temporary position that begins in May.
